While Time Passes

Form and Structure:

The work is designed as a functional tabletop alarm clock. A human hand holds the clock, which appears to melt downward like liquid. The clock remains operational, continuing to measure time precisely even as its form dissolves.

Numbers on the melting clock form are recessed, and the lower numbers on the clock form, "5, 6, and 7" are extended downward, merging with the melting surface, the distortion visually.

The entire structure is supported by the connection between the wrist and the melting clock form. To ensure stability, I plan to adjust the internal weight distribution during the 3D modeling process. If necessary, I may add internal weight at the base of the wrist to prevent imbalance.

Regarding the specific dimensions of this clock, I still need to know the exact lengths of the hour and minute hands before I can complete it. Also, regarding how to mount the battery compartment on the "human hand," I need to see an actual battery compartment and understand how to replace the batteries before I can begin designing it.

Hand: FDM

Melting clock form: Resin

Inspiration:

First, this project was inspired by an artwork called "The Persistence of Memory."

Then, This painting prompted some of my methods, that no matter what we do, time will pass. Eventually, even memories will fade. But fading is not simply loss, it is also part of how we continue living. The melting clock represents time passing, something steady and unstoppable. Above it, the rotating pearl ring reflects the gentle act of remembering. Time flows downward, while memory quietly circles. This project is not about resisting time, but about accepting change.

Rotating Mechanism:

If the final result of this machine is not good, I might choose to delete it.

In the splash area where the melted clock appears to land, I will install a hidden motor mechanism. This mechanism will drive a suspended pearl ring positioned slightly above the splash.

The motor and battery holder will be concealed within the base structure ("Splash Area" and "Human Hand"). The movement is designed to be slow and subtle, so that it feels natural rather than mechanical.

The pearl ring reflects the gentle repetition of remembering. Memories may fade, but they return from time to time, softly, without force.
